14 Tips for Traveling with Babies & Toddlers

Traveling is an exciting experience, but at times it can be stressful. Being prepared helps ease the journey and ensures a fun and memorable time. After multiple mainland and inter-island trips, I have become better traveling with my (now) 2 year old daughter and would like to share the following tips to help you:
  1. First things first, make a list of everything you need. Using a computer makes it easy to print the list before your trip, and add/change things as your travel needs change with baby’s growth.
  2. TSA allows bottled water through airport security for baby formula. Also, pack a variety of snacks to keep the little one happy. (Ex: puffs, pretzels, cereals, raisins, rice crackers)
  3. Pack a variety of toys & activities. Coloring book, stickers, toys your child has never seen before. A portable DVD player can be very entertaining. Now days, ipods and ipads are all the buzz and allow for educational children’s apps. Download some fun apps for your child before the flight.
  4. Pack a comfort item whether it be a favorite stuff animal or a special blanket.
  5. To save space, bring multi-use items (Ex. Body wash that doubles as shampoo, hair brush that can be used for both of you.) Utilize a simple color scheme for outfits & shoes.
  6. Bring a baby carrier or stroller if needed. I absolutely love and recommend the Ergo baby carrier and the Bob Revolution stroller. They have been lifesavers! And remember, checking in baby’s stroller and/or car seat is free with most airlines.
  7. When going through airport security, make it fun and talk your child through the process “Ok, we have to take our shoes off and put our bags on through the machine before going in the ‘magic tunnel’”
  8. Be mindful of your personal property. Label all your belongings with a contact phone number. (Ex. cameras, bags, ipods/ipads, DVD player, include the phone number of someone traveling with you on your cell phone.)
  9. Be prepared for colds, sicknesses, allergies, cuts, or rashes by packing appropriate medications and ointments.
  10. If traveling with a lap child, ask if there are any empty seats on the flight and if you could move to sit next to it.
  11. Sit near other families with children and exchange toys and/or snacks.
  12. Create a CD or playlist of your child’s favorite songs. It’s a miracle for car rides!
  13. Get a good night’s rest the night before so you remain alert throughout your travels.
  14. Try to relax throughout the journey, and if you find yourself in a tough spot, don’t forget to BREATHE...ahhh!
